Alien effectively operates as a meditation on the fragility of humanity, blistering body horror, and one of the most astounding visual works ever filmed. Aliens could also fit this list but since it is more action-forward, I opted for its predecessor. Possession Certain images from the film are burned into my mind.

The film centers on Mark Sam Neill , who comes home from one of his many spy trips to find out that his wife, Anna Isabelle Adjani , wants a divorce. The Entity The Entity does what all great horror must: It gets under your skin, grabs hold of your heart, and never lets go. The haunted woman in question is Carla Moran Barbara Hershey , a single mother trying to make a decent life for her children, who starts to come undone thanks to an invisible presence that brutalizes her and puts her life at grave risk. It offers no empowering ending, instead showcasing how the nightmares of abuse are often unending for some women.

A Nightmare on Elm Street A Nightmare on Elm Street has one of the most enviable premises in horror: a monster who invades your dreams, turning the space you should feel safest into a hellscape. I recently watched the Wes Craven—directed slasher film for the first time in years, and it was amazing that even after seeing the film several times, its darkly humorous, arch brand of horror still thrilled me.

Freddy Krueger is less the sickly trickster he became in later entries and more a grotesque abomination who delights in killing off teenagers in increasingly inventive ways, as an act of vengeance against the parents who set him aflame. Hellraiser Hellraiser has been a favorite of mine since childhood. I saw it far too young, but can you blame me?

But my love for the film is rooted in its female characters — the tenacious Kirsty Cotton Ashley Laurence and arguably one of the wickedest stepmothers ever put on film, Julia Cotton Clare Higgins. Kirsty and Julia represent two sides of the most popular images of women in horror — saint and sinner, survivor and villain, pure and profane. The way they wrestle for control over their lives is what makes Hellraiser one of the most perverse and terrifying horror films ever made.

Scream How it deconstructs and heightens the slasher genre?

Is it the unconventional opening that offs megastar Drew Barrymore? The expert blend of humor and horror? All of the above. Scream is slick, propulsive, and a hell of a lot of fun. The Craft I can already hear the snickers for putting this on the list, but hear me out. The film follows a group of teenage girls in a Los Angeles Catholic school who are able to complete their coven when natural witch Sarah Robin Tunney moves to town with her father.

No cinematic fairy-tale revisionism truly lives up to its literary counterparts quite like the film Snow White: A Tale of Terror. Ginger Snaps Ginger becomes emboldened by her new power but also reckless, creating a twisted tale of prickly sisterhood and power under the guise of a bloody werewolf film. The Others My favorite horror tends to be works that are what one of my friends refers to as reality two steps to the left.

But the space between normalcy and the fantastical is where the best fears live. It soon becomes clear that a curse has coiled its way around the people that have lived in the house, which leads Rika to face a variety of horrors she is ill-equipped to deal with. Shimizu also directed the American remake a few years after the original, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, that is worth a watch as well.

May So good.

A highly recommendable book. Though keep in mind that, as with all neighborhood garage sales, there are some roads you never need to drive down. Sometimes you just skip them because you know who they are, and you know their history. Jan 23, Fantasy Literature rated it liked it.

Golden therefore undertook to create a book full of such Some of the horror-ish stories were more gore than others, which I was not prepared for. I do enjoyed some of them, especially Dark Witness and Steward of the Blood. Pretty good short horror stories.

  1. Latest Updates.
  2. Senior Chemistry: A Course Companion for Year 12.
  4. The Adventures of Tinguely Querer?
  5. Shopping Cart!
  6. Some of them were way out there. Crazy imaginations. Great reads. Fast paced horror stories and dark fantasy. If you like the horror genre then you will like most of these short stories. Some of them were not to my taste but not too bad either. I made sure to read them all completely. Even when I thought I didn't like it from the beginning, sometimes the story would turn out to surprise me. Incredible imaginations. Jan 20, Rebecca rated it liked it.

My overall reaction to this anthology was mixed, as you may expect from a collection of stories by different authors. All in all, it was an interesting mix. Jun 23, Lori rated it it was amazing. Way more horror than fantasy. At least a couple of truly fucked up stories. However, I have to say that they were all well-written, and while some were better than others, none were bad or boring. The worst was just weirdly absurd and not my thing and it was short.

My faves w Way more horror than fantasy. My faves were: Dark Witness T. Sep 01, Rainsage rated it it was ok. It took me four years to finish this book because every time I read a story, I was honestly discouraged from continuing to the next one. There some interesting ideas presented by some of the authors, but a lot of the problems happen in the execution of the plot. I know there's a finite amount of time in a short story, but that should encourage the writers to be extra methodical when constructing the story they want to tell and if It took me four years to finish this book because every time I read a story, I was honestly discouraged from continuing to the next one.

    The First Lovecraft Film

I know there's a finite amount of time in a short story, but that should encourage the writers to be extra methodical when constructing the story they want to tell and if a short form is the appropriate medium. This took me so long to read partly because I lost it for about three months. Not really what I was expecting, as I was expecting stories with two distinct voices. Instead everyone worked well together and produced seemingly individual stories.

    Dark Duets

As with every book of short stories, some were great, some were good, and some were meh. Apr 24, Shoshana G rated it it was ok Shelves: horror. This collection of horror short stories was not for me. Horror's not my favorite genre in the first place, but none of these stories stuck with me, even the ones by authors I like.

Jan 19, Yasmin Williams rated it really liked it. Some of the short stories are better than others. A few are very weird. Overall it's a good book for those who like to read but don't have the time or patience to devote to a full novel. Feb 22, Nicole N rated it it was ok.

Im more of a fan for dark short stories. But I found this one to be eh. Jun 28, Brenda Haven rated it liked it. All I can say is, very strange story. An anthology of seventeen horror, thriller and dark fantasy stories which are collaborations between at least two authors. May 17, Becca rated it liked it. Not what I expected but ok.
